Community Life

Mason's commitment to his City has resulted in him serving as a Board Member and Assistant Chair of the Economic Development Committee on Manhattan's Community Board 12, as well as a Board Member for Credit Where Credit Is Due, a local financial literacy education organization.  A detailed accounting of his community board experience is available here.

Mason lives in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan.  The neighborhood is a multi-cultural residential neighborhood known for its Dominican restaurants, the GW Bridge, Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, and the Audubon Ballroom

Mason's service on his community board is driven by his desire to not have a "rubber stamp committee" in his neighborhood. He tries to challenge himself and others into thinking critically about important decisions that make up the fabric of a good neighborhood. He is passionate about reducing crime in a sensible manner, improving sanitation and reducing the noise level of NYC.  One of his favorite special roles as a Community Board Member is as a mediator between tenants and nuisance bars/clubs.  He has successfully negotiated and overseen implementation of three major bar/club noise remediation projects as an independent broker appointed by the Chairman.

As a board member of Credit Where Credit Is Due, Mason hopes to be able to help the organization refine and package their award winning bi-lingual financial literacy training programs for adults and children.  He wants to build support for the program's model and have it replicated throughout the U.S. (starting with N.Y. State).

Mason recently began an appointed 3 year term to the NYC Department of Youth and Community Renewal's Community Advisory Board.

Mason enjoys participating in community affairs and strongly encourages others who share this interest to pursue it. Below are links to various ways of getting involved with your community too.
